About Unlock English
A CLASS WORTH REMEMBERING
Most people can remember a teacher, an activity or a moment from school that stayed with them. I’ve always liked the idea of creating more of those moments.
Unlock English grew from years of trying to make my classroom more thoughtful, engaging and responsive to the students in front of me. The games are one part of that — something different to look forward to, something everyone can get involved in, and something that might still be talked about after the class is over.
If an adventure gives students a positive memory of learning together, then it has done what I hoped it would do.
MORE THAN ONE WAY TO SUCCEED
Not every student is the quickest reader, the most confident speaker or the first to put their hand up. That does not mean they have less to offer.
The games combine language with observation, logic, visual thinking, problem solving and teamwork, giving students different ways to contribute. Sometimes the student who says very little in an ordinary class is the one who spots the clue everyone else missed.
I want the games to give every student a genuine way to be useful to the team.
LANGUAGE IS PART OF THE PUZZLE
Puzzles already ask us to decode unfamiliar information: a symbol stands for a letter, a pattern reveals a message, a clue points to something else. Language works in much the same way.
In Unlock English, pictures give students an intuitive starting point. They connect an image to a concept, the concept to an English word, and then meet that same vocabulary again through spelling, reading and puzzles.
Instead of learning a list before the game begins, students decode the language as part of the adventure.
MADE FOR REAL CLASSROOMS
However imaginative the adventure becomes, it still has to work in a real classroom.
The games are designed to be practical to prepare, easy to organise and flexible enough for different groups to play in different ways. Clear progression, printable materials and parallel puzzles help keep students involved without creating unnecessary work for the teacher.
The aim is to create something that feels much bigger than the preparation required to run it.
FROM MY CLASSROOM
I’m Chris, an English teacher and the creator of Unlock English.
The games started as activities I made for my own classes, usually for special occasions or as something different from the normal routine.
As I developed them, I began thinking more about how another teacher could pick one up and use it without needing lots of extra preparation. That meant simplifying the setup while keeping the story, puzzles and sense of occasion that made the games enjoyable in the first place.
Unlock English grew from there — classroom ideas that I wanted to make easier to share and use.
